Dell XPS 13 9343 Ultraportable Notebook with 13.3 Display PDF Print E-mail

Dell XPS 13 9343 Ultraportable Notebook with 13.3 Display

One of the most interesting new notebooks so far 2015 is the Dell XPS 13 9343. This ultra-thin laptop stands out with its near bezel-less “infinity” 13.3-inch display with either Full HD (1920 x 1080) QHD+ (3200 x 1800) resolution and touchscreen support on the QHD+ models. Technology behind the panel is IGZO, offering wide viewing angles like those on IPS-based panels. Furthermore, display brightness is rated at 400 nits, meaning that it is very bright and suitable for outdoor use. The screen is strapped by edge-to-edge Corning’s scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass.

The thin bezel has enabled Dell to squeeze the 13.3″ screen in a chassis of a 12-inch laptop, making the XPS 13 9343 highly portable and easy to tote around. The “infinity” display is accompanied by a chiclet keyboard with backlight and a single-piece trackpad. The keyboard deck is made of carbon fiber in black color, while the lid is constructed of silver-colored aluminum. Overall, the chassis is very slim, measuring just 0.35 inches at the thinnest and 0.6 inches at the thickest point. The laptop is very light too, measuring 2.6 pounds.

Under the hood, the Dell XPS 13 9343 packs one of the latest 5th Gen Intel Core Broadwell processors. It can be either the i3-5010U or i5-5200U mid-range dual-core CPU, depending on customers’ choice. Storage space is either 128GB or 256GB large and is based on solid state drive-type devices. RAM memory size is 4GB or 8GB. The display is managed by the Intel HD 5500 non-gaming graphics integrated in the Intel CPUs.

Sound is powered by stereo speakers, while video chats work with help of a 720p web camera. The cam isn’t built into the usual top display bezel, because of it thinness. It is located in the lower left corner of the display panel instead.

Regarding networking and connectivity, the Dell XPS 13 9343 features 802.11AC Wi-Fi wireless, Bluetooth, two USB 3.0 ports, a mini DisplayPort for external monitors, and a 3-in-1 media card reader.

According to Dell, the sealed 52 WHr 4-cell battery can provide up to 15 hours of battery life on models with Full HD displays, while QHD+ resolution reduces the maximal battery life to still impressive 11 hours.

Dell Inspiron 15 5000 5548 Mainstream 15.6 Laptop PDF Print E-mail

Dell Inspiron 15 5000 5548 Mainstream 15.6 Laptop

The Dell Inspiron 15 5000 5548 is the latest series of the popular Inspiron 5000 15.6-inchn mainstream notebook PC. In fact, it is just a refreshed version of the 5547. As the main difference, Dell’s 5548 features the recently released 5th Generation Intel Core “Broadwell” series processors instead of the 4th Gen Core “Haswell”. Broadwell brings a lower power consumption, and somewhat better performance of the CPU itself and its Intel HD (5500) integrated graphics.

At the time of this writing, the Dell Inspiron 5000 5548 is available only with the 5th Gen Intel i5-5200U processor with the HD 5500 integrated GPU. The laptop is also expected to be available with a faster Core i7 chip and optional AMD Radeon M265 and M275 mid-range dedicated graphics. Another upgrade is inclusion of the new Intel RealSense 3D camera technology. In addition, touchscreen is supported on the whole notebook series, instead of being just an optional feature.

Dell Inspiron 15 5000 5548 Mainstream 15.6 Laptop

The rest of the notebook remained the same. The 0.9″ thin chassis with a black plastic keyboard deck and sivlerish aluminum lid is unchanged, as well as screen resolution which is either 1366-by-768 or 1920-by-1080 pixels. Sadly, IPS wide viewing angle display technology is missing. System memory support goes up to 16 Gigabytes, while hard drive storage is 1 Terabyte large. Both RAM and HDD are user upgradeable via doors on the bottom of the casing. The Chiclet style keyboard provides key backlight as an option and is spill-resistant. The 5548 has stereo speakers, a 2-megapixel webcam with built-in RealSense3D on the front bezel, two USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI video connector, multiformat media card reader, Wi-Fi and Ethernet LAN network connection, and Bluetooth. Intel’s Wireless Display technology is optionally available.

The laptop comes with either 3‑cell 43.50 WHr or 4‑cell 58 WHr battery. There is no info on battery life, but a good indicator of it could be the battery life of the previous verison. It lasted more than seven hours with the 58 WHr unit.

Dell’s 5548 weighs in at 5.3 pounds, which is a usual weight for a mainstream notebook with a 15.6-inch display.

Dell Inspiron 15 3000 3543 Cheap 15.6 Laptop with Intel CPUs PDF Print E-mail

Dell Inspiron 15 3000 3543 Cheap 15.6 Laptop with Intel CPUs

The Dell Inspiron 15 3000 3543 is the latest refresh of the PC maker’s 3000-series budget-class 15.6-inch laptop. This $350+ home and office notebook with square-ish chassis made of matte black plastics features the latest Intel Broadwell processors instead of older Haswell found in the previous 3542 and AMD CPUs in the 3541.

Currently, Dell’s 3543 provides a couple of lower-to-mid range Broadwell CPU choices. Namely, the entry-level Intel Celeron 3205U and mid-tier Intel Core i3-5005U and i5-5200U. The Celeron is satisfactory only for the basic web, office, and multimedia tasks, while the i3 and i5 offer noticeably better performance, so you can do photo and video editing on them without stutter. In addition, the i3 and i5 have much faster Intel HD 5500 integrated graphics instead of the basic Intel HD, so they can be used for playing even the latest games on low settings. The Inspiron 3543 is also expected to be available with lower-end Nvidia dedicated video cards, namely the GeForce 820M 2GB and 840M 4GB. These can offer more fluid gaming than the aforementioned Intel GPU solutions. However, high-detail high-resolution 3D gaming is obviously beyond all the mentioned GPUs. As for system memory, the notebook supports up to 8GB. It has only one RAM slot, but thankfully, it is easily accessible for upgrades, as same as the hard drive bay. The machine comes with either 500GB or 1TB HDD preinstalled. DVD burner is present on this laptop by default.

Dell Inspiron 15 3000 3543 Cheap 15.6 Laptop with Intel CPUs

Touchscreen is optional. Whether it is touch-enabled or not, the display has 1366-by-768 resolution as the only option. IPS wide viewing angle technology has been omitted, but that’s expected when it comes to the budget notebook category. Another useful perk is optional backlight on the Chiclet-style keyboard with a dedicated numeric pad.

The average buyer won’t be disappointed with Dell’s selection of ports, slots, and networking features of the laptop. It has three USB ports, HDMI video connector, a combo audio mic/headphone jack, and a memory card reader, as well as Wi-Fi, Ethernet LAN, and Bluetooth connections.

Regarding physical specs, it’s worth noting that the non-touch Inspiron 3543 models weigh in at 5.3 pounds for the touch variant is a bit heavier at 5.5 pounds. The chassis is 0.9″ high, so the laptop is quite thin.

For a more detailed info on quality of the Inspiron 15 3000 series you can read this review of the 3541, which is basically the same as the 3543 except the core CPU/GPU components. Overall, the 15 3000 series generally offers a good bang for the buck. If you’re willing to shell out more money for a display with a higher resolution, batter selection of Broadwell CPUs, and sexier look of the laptop, you can check out the mainstream Inspiron 15 5000 5548 series as well as numerous other systems with the same widely adopted 15.6″ form factor.

Dell Inspiron 17 5000 5749 17.3 Big Notebook PDF Print E-mail

Dell Inspiron 17 5000 5749 17.3 Big Notebook

The Dell Inspiron 17 5000 5749 is a prime example of a 17.3-inch mainstream consumer notebook. Alongside the big screen with either 1600×900 or Full HD 1920×1080 resolution, the Inspiron 5749 sports the brand new processors by Intel. Namely, the Intel Pentium 3805U and 5th Generation Intel Core i3-5005U, i5-5200U, and i7-5500U, all from the latest Broadwell CPU family.

These chips have replaced their Haswell counterparts in the previous Inspiron 5748 model. Broadwell brings several improvements over Haswell, primarily a better performance per Watt ratio. The Pentium 3805U option is an entry-level one and offers satisfactory performance for the basic tasks while making configurations using it affordable. The i3-5005U is somewhat faster and is adequate for most folks, while the i5-5200U and i7-5500U are for those who frequently do computationally intensive tasks like photo and video editing. The Intel HD 5500 graphics integrated in the i3, i5, and i7 is superior in comparison to the Intel HD found on the Pentium. However, the HD 5500 is just another integrated GPU, without much muscle for playing the latest games with high detail settings. For somewhat better gaming experience, customers can opt for the Nvidia GeForce 820M or 840M discrete video cards, both with 2GB of video memory.

Dell Inspiron 17 5000 5749 17.3 Big Notebook

Dell’s Inspiron 17 5000 5749 is outfitted with either 4GB of system memory and a 500GB hard drive or 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD. These components are user-replaceable, but there is only one memory slot, so you can’t have more than 8GB of RAM. A DVD drive is present on this notebook, as same as 2 x 2W stereo speakers, and a 720p web camera.

Data input and interaction with Windows OS and software is enabled via the laptop’s spacious keyboard with numeric pad, multi-touch trackpad, and optionally touchscreen.

The keyboard, with spill resistance and optional backlight, and trackpad are embedded in a matte black deck made of plastics. On the other hand, the lid is done up in brushed aluminum.

Depending on whether the notebook has touchscreen or not, the weight and height are either 7.3 and 1.2 inch or 6.6 pounds and 1.1″.

Dell Inspiron 17 5000 5749 17.3 Big Notebook

Selection of connectivity features includes Wi-Fi wireless network support, Ethernet LAN wired networking, Bluetooth, HDMI output, audio jack, and a multi-in-one media card reader.

Power autonomy is provided by a 4-cell battery which has a low capacity for a big-screen laptop. It’s 40 WHr and there is no info on exact battery life.

With a basic price of $450 and cost-effective upgrade options, the Dell Inspiron 17 5000 5749 delivers enough value for your money. Especially for those who like to work and play on a large laptop screen and don’t mind having a bit bulky notebook. For a greater portability, you can check out the smaller Inspiron 5000 5548 with a 15.6-inch display, the same design as its bigger brother, and similar component options.

Dell Inspiron 15 7000 7548 Higher-End Mainstream Laptop PDF Print E-mail

Dell Inspiron 15 7000 7548 Higher-End Mainstream Laptop

The Dell Inspiron 15 7548 is the latest refresh of the Inspiron 7000 higher-end notebook series. This 15.6-inch laptop packs good performance in a slim aluminum housing and provides high-resolution display options.

As the main differences over the previous 7000 generation, the 7548 brings to the table new Intel processors from the Broadwell family and Ultra HD 3840×2160 display resolution alongside Full HD 1920×1080 option. The available CPU choices are the 5th Generation Intel Core Broadwell i5-5200U and i7-5500U, with upper-mid range computing performance and Intel HD 5500 integrated graphics for gaming on basic detail and resolution settings. If you want smoother gameplay, you can opt for the AMD Radeon R7 M270 4GB dedicated video card. It is however still a low-end discrete GPU solution.

The notebook has two system memory slots, thus it supports up to 16GB RAM. As for storage, it provides 1-Terabyte of hard drive capacity or a 256GB solid state drive, depending on configuration. A DVD optical drive is missing.

Dell Inspiron 15 7000 7548 Higher-End Mainstream Laptop

The screen supports touch input and is backed by IPS technology, so wide viewing angles are ensured. The keyboard consists of chiclet style keys with backlight. A dedicated numeric pad has been omitted, but on the positive side the main part of the keyboard and touchpad are perfectly centered on the base of the notebook.

Dell’s Inspiron 15 7548 features a 1.3-megapixel 720p webcam, stereo speakers, 802.11AC Wi-Fi wireless, Bluetooth, two USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0 port, HDMI video output, a media card reader, and an audio combo jack, and optional Intel Wireless Display technology.

The laptop incorporates a either a 3-cell 43 WHr or higher-capacity 4‑cell 56 WHr battery. We have no info on battery life.

The Dell 7548 measures 0.8″ in profile and weighs in at 4.8 pounds.

Overall, the 7548 is a well-equipped all-purpose laptop PC. Even the cheapest configuration ($650) offers good performance and a sharp picture on the display. When you add the attractive aluminum design to the mix, the latest Inspiron 7000 iteration is one of the best buying choices in the mainstream notebook category.

Dell Latitude 15 3000 3550 Series Budget Business Laptop PDF Print E-mail

Dell Latitude 15 3000 3550 Series Budget Business Laptop

The Dell Latitude 15 3000 3550 series is a budget-class laptop for business users. More precisely, it is aimed at the small business segment, since the notebook lacks some advanced enterprise-use features like Intel vPro system management technology or a robust security suite.

In accordance with its budget nature, processor choices start with the low-end Intel Celeron 3205U, good only for the basic office tasks. For more computing muscle, customers can choose the Latitude 3550 with the Intel Core i3-4005U, i5-5200U, and i7-5500U CPUs. All these chips are based on the latest Intel Broadwell architecture with the best performance-per-watt ratio to date. The processors are accompanied by either 4GB or 8GB of RAM, with a possibility to expand it to 16GB since the laptop has two RAM slots. For storage, Dell has provided traditional hard drive options with 500GB and 1-Terabyte capacity. DVD drive has been omitted.

Touchscreen display option isn’t available on this series, but users can configure it with Full HD 1920×1080 screen resolution instead of default 1366×768. Matte display finish is a characteristic of the business-class notebooks and the Latitude 3550 is no exception. Unfortunately, IPS technology isn’t present, so viewing angles won’t be as good as on the IPS display panels.

Keyboard backlight is optional. The laptop has a dedicated numeric pad and a multi-touch trackpad.

Other important features include stereo speakers, a 1MP 720p web camera, 802.11n wireless, Gigabit Ethernet LAN, Bluetooth, three USB ports, HDMI and VGA video jacks, a memory card reader, and an optional fingerprint reader.

All the parts are encased in a matte plastic chassis with a serious-looking and utilitarian design and a fairly slim profile of 0.9″. Weight of the laptop is 4.7 pounds, so it is relatively light 15.6-incher.

We have no info on battery life, but it is known that battery capacity is either 43 WHr or 58 WHr, depending on configuration. These capacities are better than on many other entry-level laptops with ~30 WHr batteries. It can be assumed the battery life on the Dell Latitude 15 3000 3550 is at least five hours long.

Dell Inspiron I7548-7858SLV 15.6 4K Ultra HD Touch-Screen Laptop PDF Print E-mail

Dell Inspiron I7548-7858SLV 15.6 4K Ultra HD Touch-Screen Laptop

The Dell Inspiron 15 7000 7548 is a premium-class 15.6-inch laptop PC series for consumers. This I7548-7858SLV is one of the configurations of this all-purpose laptop. It is a high-end 1,000-dollar config with an ultra-high resolution 4K display with touch support and IPS vide viewing angles, a fast Intel Core i7 dual-core processor from the latest “Broadwell” CPU family, a dedicated AMD Radeon R7 270 4GB video card, and large system memory and data storage capacities of 12GB and 1 Terabyte, respectively.

With these specs plus an aluminum housing, backlit keyboard, and a full array of networking and connectivity features, Dell’s I7548-7858SLV is easily one of the best equipped and best looking mainstream notebooks on the market.

Dell Inspiron I7548-7858SLV

Dell estimates the battery life of the I7548-7858SLV is up to eight hours, which is quite impressive for a notebook with a relatively large display, Ultra HD resolution, and small weight and thickness of 4.6 pounds and 0.8″.

If you’re considering a purchase of the Inspiron 7548, this configuration is a great one for the price. On the official Dell store, a model with less memory is $100 pricier. On the other hand, if Full HD instead of Ultra HD 4K resolution, a bit slower i5 processor, reliance on the slower Intel HD 5500 integrated graphics, and lower RAM aren’t a matter of concern for you, you can get the same notebook for much less. It starts at $650 at Dell.com.

Dell Latitude 15 5000 E5550 Business-Class Notebook PDF Print E-mail

Dell Latitude 15 5000 E5550 Business-Class Notebook

The Dell Latitude 15 5000 E5550 is a 15.6-inch laptop PC aimed at business users. It provides good performance delivered by the latest Intel processors, optional touch and Full HD display options, and advanced system management and security features. They are all packed in a sturdy chassis with a relatively low starting weight of 4.7 pounds. The display back is made of glass fiber reinforced plastic or magnesium alloy, depending on customers’ choice, while the base is plastic.

Regarding the display, the basic 1366-by-768-pixel one has anti-glare coating and lacks IPS wide viewing angle technology, while the Full HD 1920×1080 non-touch panel has IPS and is anti-glare too. Another choice is a Full HD touch screen covered with scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla glass and apparently without IPS.

On the E5550, keyboard backlight is optional. There are a dedicated number pad, a multi-touch touchpad with physical click buttons, and optionally a pointing stick device located in the middle of the keyboard.

The 5th Generation Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 Broadwell processors and their Intel HD 5500 integrated graphics are the heart of Dell’s Latitude E5550. They offer sufficient power for the daily office tasks, but aren’t optimized for stuff like 3D modeling. In addition, select CPU models have built-in Intel vPro advanced management technology. A downside of the E5550 in comparison to similar laptops including the cheaper Latitude 15 3000 3550 is presence of only one RAM slot. This means you can have only 4GB or 8GB of system memory. For data storage you can choose either a 500GB hard drive at 7,200rpm speed or a 128GB solid state drive. A DVD burner is missing.

On the other hand, the connectivity and security feature set is robust. Besides 802.11AC wireless and Bluetooth, Ethernet LAN, optional 3G / 4G mobile broadband, three USB 3.0 ports, an SD memory card reader, HDMI and VGA video jacks, and a port for “E-Docking” compatible docks, it includes optional SmartCard and fingerprint readers, and the Trusted Platform Module technology.

The notebook has stereo speakers and a 720p or Full HD web camera, depending on a configuration.

The battery of the laptop has a capacity of 38 or 51 WHr. There’s no exact info on battery life, but Dell claims it lasts “all day”, presumably an 8-hour working day.

Dell Latitude 14 5000 E5450 14-Inch Business Laptop PDF Print E-mail

Dell Latitude 14 5000 E5450

The Dell Latitude 14 5000 E5450 is a business laptop with a 14-inch display. It’s a smaller version of the 15.6-inch E5550. Besides the obvious screen size and dimensions differences, the Latitude E5450 lacks IPS wide viewing angle display technology and has a bit different processor options. Furthermore, the 14-incher doesn’t provide solid state drive options.

The 14″ display has either 1366-by-768 or 1920-by-1080 resolution and optional touch support on the higher-res models. The notebook comes with either 4th Generation Intel Core i3 “Haswell or 5th Gen Core i3, i5, and i7 “Broadwell” processor, as opposed to all-Broadwell Latitude E5550. Dell sells the E5450 only with a 500GB hard drive. RAM memory choices are modest too, because the system has only one RAM slot. You can have either 4GB or 8GB RAM. A built-in DVD drive is missing on both laptops.

On the positive side, the E5450 weighs in at 4 pounds, instead of 4.7 of the 15.6″ version.

Regarding other features, worth noting are optional keyboard backlight and magnesium alloy display lid, optional 4G mobile broadband module, and various enterprise-oriented perks such as fingerprint and SmartCard reader options, a choice of Intel’s vPro system management technology, and support for Dell’s E-dock docking stations. Also, you can configure the laptop with Professional editions of Windows 8 and 7, besides the standard Win 8.
